A Foley catheter and a suprapubic catheter are inserted during surgery. Initially, the urine may appear bloody, but this should gradually resolve. The suprapubic catheter is removed when you are completely able to empty the bladder. This can take a couple of days or up to three months, depending on your ability to empty the bladder completely. A large abdominal dressing is placed over the incised area after surgery. This dressing will remain in place for about three days. The stitches are usually removed during your first office visit after surgery. Often, a drainage tube is placed in the lower abdominal or rectal area so as to drain excess fluid and blood from the abdominal cavity. This drain is usually removed about three days after surgery, when the drainage has decreased. The amount of time it takes to recover from surgery depends on you. Your doctor can give you a good recovery-time estimate based on an evaluation of your health prior to surgery.
