Because of deeply held religious convictions or other personal reasons, some patients choose to abstain from blood transfusions when they receive medical or surgical care. Such patients may have had few healthcare alternatives – until now.
Forest Park Hospital is pleased to introduce the Center for Bloodless Medicine and Surgery, the first hospital-based program of its kind in the St Louis area. Patients of the Center benefit from:
- Treatments that do not require the use of stored blood or blood products.
- Ongoing education on bloodless healthcare issues.
- Caring professionals who are sensitive to and respectful of their beliefs.

What is bloodless medicine?
Bloodless means that a medical or surgical treatment is provided without the use of banked (stored) allogenic blood or primary blood components. Blood loss often occurs during surgery. A bloodless program endeavors to minimize blood loss by utilizing special blood conservation methods.
