Individualized Care for a Healthier Life Breast cancer is naturally a very personal issue. We never forget that at the Breast Center. So while we bring you a high level of quality, we are also sensitive to your needs for privacy and comfort. Our doctors and nurses are there to listen and answer your questions and address your concerns.
The breast center practices a team approach to breast disorders, which utilizes the talents of many specialists at once. This allows our patients to have their options provided in a coordinated fashion at the initial visit.
Early Detection and Screening Mammography is of the utmost importance for the early detection of breast cancer since it is estimated that one in eight women will be diagnosed with the disease during their lifetime. With early detection, however, many women with breast cancer can be treated. Early detection is maximized through a combined approach of breast self-examination, regular physician examinations, and mammography at recommended intervals.
Women today have tighter schedules, growing family obligations, and careers. As your responsibilities grow and change, you need professional services designed to meet your breast concerns. That’s why we’ve done everything we can to make this vital screening convenient and stress-free.
Our mammography service, directed by a dedicated breast-imaging specialist, offers a comprehensive breast cancer detection program. For your comfort and privacy we have developed an attractive setting that is staffed by friendly people. This facility has been fully accredited by the American College of Radiology and certified by the Food and Drug Administration.
In addition to our breast screening and expanded imaging service, we have readily available educational resources in the breast center library as well as a dedicated clinical nurse specialist to answer your important questions. We encourage all of our patients to utilize the library’s video, literature, and model for learning breast self-examination techniques.
Sophisticated Diagnostic Imaging When screening mammograms are determined to be abnormal or if a suspicious area is found by the physician’s exam, more extensive testing may be necessary. We offer on-site, mammographic diagnostic work-up, usually at the same visit. Complimenting mammography are our dedicated breast ultrasound and mammoscintography services.
If it is determined that a suspicious area of the breast needs to be biopsied we offer minimally invasive techniques. For lesions that can be felt by the physician, we can perform on-site fine needle aspiration biopsies. Minimally invasive ultrasound guided biopsies can be performed rapidly. For mammographically detected lesions, we have access to advanced stereotactic core biopsy technology that allows a biopsy to be performed with the aid of mammography.
Individualized Care The breast center has experienced and specially trained breast surgeons that practice some of the latest in breast conservation treatments and the new technique of sentinel lymph node biopsy. Our plastic surgeons work side-by-side with the breast surgeons to provide breast reconstruction options should they be necessary. Before and after surgery we have a dedicated clinical nurse specialist who helps our patients prepare for surgery and who promotes a speedy recovery afterwards.
After surgery, the breast center offers talented specialists in radiation therapy with some of the latest technology available. Our medical oncologists practice up-to-date care. We also have a rehabilitation unit that specializes in treating lymphedema and other post-mastectomy conditions.
Appointments If you are age 40 or older and are currently having no breast problems, you may schedule your own screening mammogram. Many insurance companies, including Medicare, may cover some or all of the costs of mammography. If you are experiencing a breast problem or if you have had breast cancer or breast implants, we ask that you be referred from your physician for a diagnostic mammogram.
